This is a spectacular, completely flawless Katana by the Sword smith Hamabe Toshiyuki c.1818. Toshiyuki was the son of Hamabe Toshizane who was in turn son of Hamabe Toshinori, founder of the Hamabe Mon.  The Hamabe Mon was in part due to the patronage of the Tottori Ikeda Ke of Inaba no Kuni. The school was famous for forging in the Bizen tradition with the Kobushigata choji of Naka Kawachi no Kami Kunisuke.  While Toshinori and Toshizane were rated Josaku for their skill, Toshiyuki was rated Chujosaku which indicates his superior skill.

This sword was body tested, and the details inscribed on the nakago by the famous sword tester Yamada Go Saburo.  Yamado Go Saburo was a member of the famous Yamado family of sword testers. The Yamado family along with the Yamato family were the only two official families of sword testers commissioned for this task.  This particular sword cut through two bodies, through the chest (Futo Buto Dodan Barai). It is unusual as it was tested the same year it was produced.  Generally, the body test blades you see are tested well after their production.

The nagasa is just under a full 29" at 28.875", while overall it is a whopping 39". It has a beautiful and graceful sugata with a sori of approx. 3/4". The hada is tight Itame and the Hamon is Komidare choji. It has perfectly cut bo-hi, and exhibits a tremendous amount of activity. Activity such as nioi, nie, ji-nie, ara-nie, ashi, kensuji, chikei and hakikake in the boshi.

This sword was hand carried into Japan by John Yumoto in 1984 for polish, shirasaya, habaki and papers.
