A phenomenal example
of a ubu zaimei katana by the 1st
generation Hizen Tadakuni. Signed: Hizen ju Harima no Daijo Fujiwara Tadakuni. Tadakuni is a Jo-saku rated sword maker.
This sword is datable
to the mid 17th
century. Works dating from Kan'ei 11 (1634) were signed Harima Daijo Fujiwara Tadakuni.
Later, Tadakuni
was granted and signed with the Harima no Kami
title.
Tadakuni was born in
Keicho 9 (1604), the eldest
son of Yoshiie (Hirosada),
who was the younger
brother of the shodai (1st
generation) Hizen Tadayoshi.
He was retained by
the Ogi han, one of the three Saga Nabeshima branch
clans.
At the end of his
career, ca. Empo period, (1673-81),
he took the tonsure to
become a lay Buddhist
priest (nyudo) and adopted
the pseudonym Kyutetsu. He died in Genroku 4 (1691) at the age of 87.
